Nile by Bike and Boat Update: Travel Safety

Message from the tour operator of the Nile by Bike and Boat tour: The events in Egypt remain fluid and change seems quite likely very soon, but the unrest for the moment is confined to Cairo downtown, Alexandria on the Mediterranean and the Nile Delta, Suez on the Suez Canal, and some other smaller cities in the Nile Delta and along the Suez Canal and Mediterranean. Most importantly, there have been no signs of unrest in the Upper Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan or South to Abu Simbel where Egypt Bike and Sail the Nile tours operate. This area is over 400 miles South of Cairo both physically and psychologically, so it is not a surprise that things are quiet in that part of the country. Cairo Airport and the surrounding area is at quite a distance from Cairo downtown and also remains safe and peaceful.

See the following interactive map for information on where the protests in Egypt are actually taking place. Contrary to reports about the situation, the entire country is NOT in revolt, but rather only a small part of the country physically in the North. http://maps.google.com/maps Therefore, for the present, we intend to continue running the Egypt Bike and Sail tours on the Nile in February, March, April, and May as we consider the situation to be safe in the areas we will be visiting. If the situation changes in these areas or at Cairo Airport, we will re-evaluate and advise as the need arises. For those who have expressed concern about travel through Cairo: 1. the situation at Cairo Airport remains safe and peaceful as the airport is at some distance from downtown. 2. The protests have not been directed at tourists, so there is no reason to expect any unrest at Cairo Airport. However, if you wish to avoid Cairo Airport and Cairo altogether, there are several international flights from Europe and Doha, Qatar nonstop into Luxor and nearby Hurghada, both of which have remained peaceful. If you wish to explore any of these options, we would be glad to assist.
