Family bike vacations: tips to get you ready

Rest assured: BikeTours.com makes readying bike tour travelers top priority. And once you pick the best trip for your family, the tour operator will arm you with all the goods: itineraries, hotel information, and more.

But sometimes, especially for first-time riders, a little extra prep-work before the trip can make all the difference in putting your mind at ease for what’s to come (and getting you pumped for the big adventure!).

Here are a few tips to get you and your family ready for the trek:

Talk to our tour advisors

If you aren’t sure what your family can handle, talk to one of our tour advisors. We’re happy to answer (or get the answers to) any questions you may have.

Consider the necessary gear

For young children, investigate options that can provide both bike trailers and baby seats. This provides kids (and you!) the luxury of changing up the scenery (or even sleeping while Mom or Dad pedal!). And in the bike trailer, there’s enough room for kids to bring along a couple toys or books, or comfortable eat a snack along the way. Last but not least, don’t forget helmets. Children must wear helmets no matter where you are in the world.

Go on a few pre-trip training rides

Bike tours can accommodate all abilities, but don’t let the trip be the first time in the saddle. Practice loading up with the necessary gear (this will also help you figure out what’s unnecessary!), and get everyone used to possible different scenarios you may encounter.

Be prepared to stop

As any parent knows, if you are traveling with kids, be ready to expect the unexpected. This means additional stops for even the smallest of sites: the roadside ice cream stand, a fountain in the park, or the unforeseen playground. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though. Kids have a way of making us slow down and enjoy. Remember, it’s about the journey, not the destination!
