Escape the Heat: 8 Cooler Places to Cycle in Europe

When the European summer really settles in, the famous southern routes can turn from a pleasure into a slog. Midday heat, busy roads, and long climbs in full sun are not most people's idea of a relaxing holiday. The good news is that some of the loveliest cycling in Europe sits well away from the heat: up in the north, out on the coast, and high among the lakes, where the air stays fresh, the daylight runs long, and the roads are blissfully quiet.

Fjords, glens, and the wild Atlantic

For dramatic scenery and cool, clean air, it is hard to beat the far northwest. On Bergen to Sognefjord, you explore Norway's largest fjord at an active but manageable pace, travelling part of the way by scenic ferry and riding past waterfalls, stave churches, and fjord-side farms where the summer air stays fresh. Alpine lakes and forest paths

You do not have to go all the way north to stay cool. The lake country in the foothills of the Alps offers shade, altitude, and a swim whenever you want one.
